Sault Area Hospital Response to Media Coverage of NDP Press Conference

2

Over the last five years, Sault Area Hospital’s electricity costs to have risen by about $900k or 47%.

SAH is challenged annually to find efficiency improvements in our operations due to many factors such as the impacts of health system funding reform, zero to minimal increases in hospital funding over the last several years, compensation increases and increasing electrical rates.

SAH has not made decisions directly tied to the increase in electricity rates. There are no planned layoffs of frontline staff at Sault Area Hospital.

As the issue of electricity costs uniformly affects hospitals, Sault Area Hospital is working collaboratively with other Ontario Hospitals and the Ontario Hospital Association to advocate for a provincial approach to address the cost pressures facing health care in Ontario.

  1. It is imperative that the proper system be created using an integrated public health care system that would prevent us from wasting valuable resources and led to a system where there is quality, compassion, dignity and respect for residents, patients and workers.

For the by-election, political party Health Care platforms must stop privatization, impose
minimum standards of care, increase front line workers, increase health care services at the hospital, reinvision Long-Term Care, replace the funding formula, eliminate LHIN, flatten administrative levels. The health care system can work without unmanageable costs.
