Sault Online - The Jamestown Flower Bomb event - Taking back the downtown

Sault Online - The Jamestown Flower Bomb event - Taking back the downtownTaking Back Downtown is the creative output of engaged community members  who are mobilizing and advocating for positive change in Sault Ste. Marie’s downtown.

WHAT: Flower Bombing is a guerrilla community initiative that in this case, explores the karma and power of beautifying a less utilized public space. Flower bombing is practiced in Cities across the world and is a form tactical urbanism.

“Tactical urbanism is the principle that citizens can undertake direct low-cost, high-reward actions that immediately improve some aspect of a community’s public life and demonstrate to city leaders that there are opportunities for easy, successful changes to the status quo.” –  http://www.treehugger.com/urban-design/tactical-urbanism-action-guerrilla-intervention-brings-change.html

WHY: Our goal is to make-over the space in front of the Soup Kitchen so that we can be in the running for a City Beautification Award. Jamestown has a unique and vibrant history and is a space where businesses, the Soup Kitchen and community members call home. The space itself shows great potential; all we need is a little greenery, some colour and positive vibes. Hence, the Jamestown Flowerbomb.

WHEN: On Tuesday July 16th, Taking Back Downtown in collaboration with members of the neighbourhood will set up Flowerbomb headquarters from 4pm to 8pm and work together to transform the space.

WE NEED YOUR HELP! Do you have a green thumb? Are you interested in helping to beautify Jamestown? Do you have access to gardening tools and/or gardening supplies? Paint brushes and paint? Would you like to provide us with some musical inspiration? Then stop on by and lend a hand! Flower, soil, paint and mulch donations are also welcome!
