This week in sports for Sault Ste Marie teams was a crazy one.  Sault Ste Marie was represented at NOSSA Basketball in Sudbury, Sault Ste and in North Bay with the Superior Heights Steelhawks in the 2013 NOSSA Senior Football Championships.

The St. Basil Saints Senior girls took the win at home and captured the 2013 ‘AAA’ NOSSA Championship title over their cross city rivals the St. Mary’s Knights with a win of 33 – 21.  In the 2013 ‘AA’ Junior 2013 ‘AAA’ NOSSA Championships, the Superior Heights Steelhawks brought home the gold with a 42 – 41 win over the host LaSalle Lancers in Sudbury over the November 15th – 16th weekend.  The Junior Korah Colts galloped to a 60- 38 win over College Notre Dame from Sudbury at St. Basil and were crowned the  2013 ‘AAA’ NOSSA Junior Champions.

The senior Superior Heights Steelhawks football team traveled to North Bay to defend a 17 year winning streak of a Sault Ste Marie team winning the NOSSA Senior Football Championship.  Steve Hiiemma ran for over 150 yards for the Steelhawks, but wasn’t enough to hold of the Trojan’s.  West Ferris captured the 2013 NOSSA Championship and broke Sault Ste Marie long standing winning streak of NOSSA titles.

 

Soo Thunderbirds return home with losing 3 games on the road in Iroquois Falls, Kirkland Lake and North Bay but taking a win Saturday evening in Blind River over the Beavers.  Sault native Blake Speers of the Soo Greyhounds was named to Team Ontario to represent Ontario in Cape Breton at the end of December.  White Pines Wolverines and CASS Huskies participate in the 34th edition of the Lively Invitational just outside of Sudbury over the weekend.  The Wolverines who are winless in the Sault Ste Marie high School Hockey League returned home with one point and a 0-3-1 record while the Desbarat CASS Huskies captured the gold against the St. Charles Cardinals in the final on Sunday.

In the Sault Ste Marie high School Hockey League , the St. Mary’s Knights in 1st, the CASS Huskies in 2nd Korah Colts in 3rd, St. Basil Saints in 4th, Superior Heights Steelhawks in 5th and the White Pines round out the 6 team league in 6th heading into week 3 of the 2013 – 2014 season.

The 2013 – 2014 Senior Boys Basketball teams took to the floor at Korah Collegiate in the Annual Senior East – West, the final score of the East – West was 101 for the West and 92 for the East.  Both Algoma University Thunderbird teams were in action over the Saturday with the Guelph Gryphons running past both Algoma Thunderbirds men’s and women’s teams.  On Friday, the Algoma Thunderbird’s men’s basketball team ran past last year’s CIS Silver Medallist, the Lakehead Thunderwolves, in a physical affair on Friday evening at the George Leach Centre.  In the earlier game, the women fell to the Thunderwolves.

In the second week of High School Curling League action wrapped up Thursday at Soo Curlers Association with three games played in the Boys Division.

The RBCDS Wealth Management/CTC Gas+ Atom Minor AA Jr. Greyhounds travelled to London to play in the Tim Hickman Memorial Tournament hosted by the London Jr Knights this past weekend and took gold in the close affair over the London Jr Knights in the finals.  Taking the sweep in Sudbury, the Soo Thunder Minor Midgets were on the road this past weekend to play their northern rivals the Nickel City Sons and won both games.
