Approximately 300 swimmers representing 15 swim clubs from the Northeastern Region of Ontario (NEOR) competed this past weekend at the 2014 Dave Kensit Championships. At the conclusion of the three day event, Sault Ste Marie Aquatic Club (SSMAC) finished in top spot with 899 points ahead of Sudbury Laurentian Swim Club (SLSC) with 884 points, Kirkland Lake Swim Club (KLAC) with 664.5 points and Timmins Marlins Swim Club (TMSC) with 591.5 points. In addition to taking top spot, SSMAC swimmers took two individual high point awards and set two new club records.

The Northern Storm Aquatic Club (NSAC) stayed close to home this weekend to participate in the Dave Kensit Memorial Championship Short Course Meet held at the John Rhodes Aquatic Center. The event was hosted by the Sault Ste. Marie Aquatic Club (SSMAC). The swim meet ran from Friday, January 31st, 2014, through to Sunday, February 2nd, 2014. Sixteen teams participated sending 275 swimmers to Sault Ste. Marie from across Northern Ontario. NSAC had 18 swimmers participate ranging in age from 8 to 16 years of age.

The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League announced its 3 Stars of the week for the time frame concluding February 2nd and garnering accolades were a trio of forwards in Darcy Haines and Gavin Burbach of the Soo Thunderbirds along with Samuel Wilbur of the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners.

The Sault Female Hockey Association Midget Wildcats were in Sault Ste Marie, Michigan on February 1st and 2nd at the Big Bear Arena to face the Keweenaw Storm.

In the week after the Sault Ste Marie High School exam break, the Knights Take a Bite Out of the Huskies and the Steelhawks Grab Win Over the Saints At the Rhodes in Sault Ste Marie High School League action.

The Soo Greyhounds were in North Bay in less than 24 hours after a win against the Wolves in Sudbury on Saturday evening where the Soo clinched a 2013 – 2014 playoff position. The Greyhounds and Battalion hit the ice in a 2:00 p.m matinee at the Memorial Gardens in North Bay.

Sault native and biathlete, Brett Davie has completed his first European open biathlon championship with some good placing’s.

Zufelt Named Algoma U Player of the Month, Brett Zufelt is in his third year of studies at Algoma University in Business Adminstration (with specialisation in Marketing). Throughout the debut 2013-14 season in the OUA and CIS, he has been an integral part of the men’s basketball teams, with key blocks, steals, and points from the field and the charity line.

In front of 357 Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League hockey fans, the Soo Thunderbirds faced the Elliot Bobcats in Sault Ste Marie at the Essar Centre on Saturday evening. The Thunderbirds were coming off of a 9 – 0 win the night before over the visiting Abitibi Eskimos while the Bobcats took a 3 – 2 win over the Rivermen Friday in Espanola in double overtime. Thunderbirds Win 21 Straight At Home Over the Bobcats.
