City employees came to work today sporting jeans for this morning’s coffee break at the Civic Centre. Their goal… to raise money for some much needed renovations at the Soup Kitchen Community Centre.

And what a spread! A donation to the “Cookie Jar” was all that was required to grab a cup of joe and gain access to a variety of pastries and various other sweet treats.

Once everyone had an opportunity to grab their goodies and a seat, CAO Joe Fratesi took the podium to thank our local Walmart and their employees for all the support they provide to the Soup Kitchen Community Centre. In addition to delivering food items daily, Walmart with the help of a local architect are working on plans for the renovation project which will transform the basement to much needed usable space. Walmart was also matching every dollar raised at this event.

Afterwards I had the opportunity to speak with Councillor Steve Butland, who has spearheaded much of the efforts so far. He informed me that Sault College has also stepped up to supply much of the labour that will be required for the renovations through its trades programs.

The Soup Kitchen Community Centre has no core funding so they rely on the support of the Community to help keep the doors open. If you would like to help, simply give them a call at 705-942-2694 or visit www.soupkitchencommunitycentre.ca
