The Sault Ste. Marie Horticultural Society is happy to announce that The Flanders poppy seeds have arrived. Their volunteer seed packer (AKA Abby Obenchain’s teenager) has packed up 50 packets of these seeds for distribution in the community, with more to come.
Abby will bring them to the next Hort Society board and monthly member meeting. If you’d like to get a hold of some seeds before then, you can call her at (705)946-2936.
So why are they giving away poppy seeds? Veterans groups are encouraging people and municipalities to plant 100 Flanders red poppies to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the start of World War I. It would be a wonderful tribute to our veterans to see beds of red poppies waving all across the Sault!
About Flanders poppies (Papaver rhoeas)
These hardy annuals….
- Grow 2-3 feet tall
- Look spectacular planted en masse
- Are not crazy about being transplanted so it’s best to sow in biodegradable pots or directly into the ground in early spring
- Will self-seed without becoming weedy (unwanted plants are easy to pull)
