City Police received several calls last night between 7:30pm and 10:30pm about a bear sighted in the River Road and Fournier Avenue areas.
The bear was observed eating apples and garbage left out for pick up. These animals will continue to frequent urban areas with readily available food supplies like garbage left out overnight.
Bears usually avoid humans but should you encounter this animal remain calm and slowly back away, watching the bear as you leave the area – never turn and run. If you are near a building or car get inside as a precaution. Keep dogs away from bears as uncontrolled dogs can lead bears back to people.
The Ministry of Natural Resources offers education and awareness products including the Bear Wise website www.ontario.ca/bearwise to teach people about bear behaviour and personal safety. Learn what to do should you come upon a bear on your property or while enjoying the outdoors.
