Peacefully at the Maple View Nursing Home on Friday, April 4, 2014 at the age of 92.
Beloved husband of the late Rachel for 72 years. Loving father of Lydia. Proud grandfather of Vicky and David Temmerman (Brandi). Great grandfather of Jack, Sean and Alex. Brother-in-law of the late Irma Hallaert (late Henri). Uncle of Frank Hallaert, Dirk Hallaert (Cathy), Gertie Hollingshead (late Billy) and Ingrid Hallaert. Cousin of Etienne Sestige (Georgette) of Belgium. Best friend of Joy and Dave Burmaster.
In 1965 Marcel helped found the Steelworkers Union Chess Club. He was the president of the Benelux Club for Saultites with ties to Belgium beginning in 1970. From 1969 – 1972 he was also president of the Algoma Steel Hockey league.
Marcel was the Sault’s Mr. Bicycle as he founded the Bicycle Club in 1972 and was president of the club for 15 years. In 1996 he was honoured with the George Wallace trophy for his years of contribution.
Friends may call at the Arthur Funeral Home & Cremation Centre on Sunday, April 6, 2014 from 2:30 pm – 3:45 pm. Funeral service to follow in the chapel at 4 pm. Rev. Betty Pretty officiating. Interment Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
