The Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board (HSCDSB) will be celebrating Catholic Education Week from May 4 to May 9, 2014. This year’s celebration will be highlighted by the participation of students from St. Basil Secondary and St. Mary’s College in a province-wide Mass on Wednesday, May 7, 2014.
Students and staff from both schools will converge on the Essar Centre in Sault Ste. Marie for the Mass which will be celebrated by Bishop Jean Louis Plouffe. The two schools will be among 192 Catholic schools across Ontario participating in this event. A highlight of the Mass will be the reading of a message from Pope Francis.
“This Mass was an idea put forth by Student Trustees across the province. It is great to see our Catholic leaders of tomorrow showing that leadership today. We are more than happy to support their efforts,” said HSCDSB Director of Education, John Stadnyk.
“I want to thank the Board for its overwhelming support for this Mass. Working with everyone from Administration to teachers and other students has been a pleasure. I now realize just how much preparation goes into such an event and the enthusiasm shown by all involved is inspirational,” said St. Mary’s College Student Trustee, Tiann Nantais.
“We hope that this Mass will be another step to bringing two unique student bodies into one. As we move closer to St. Basil Secondary and St. Mary’s College melding into one school community this is a perfect opportunity to strengthen future relationships,” said St. Basil Secondary Student Trustee, Alex Camirand.
