Cherished husband of Moyra for 58 years. Edward was a gentleman in the truest sense: humble, faith-filled, generous and kind. He was a special gift. Dearly beloved brother-in-law to all the Hughes family: Loretta McKay (late Bob), Colleen McLaren (late Jimmy), Kathleen Turkington (late Stuart), Noreen Rodgers (Mike), Judy Shulz (Bernard), Shaun Hughes, Iris Hughes, John Smith (late Sheila), late Larry Hughes (Annette), and the late Jimmy Hughes. Very proud of all his wonderful nephews and nieces. Remembered by special friends: Bernice and Francis Whalen, Rev. Angelo Santa Maria, and Rosa Rota.
Ed was proud of his Sault roots, and often recalled the exciting softball series when he was a pitcher for the Bayview Athletics, and later North Bay Dairy teams. He became a master furrier, having trained in the Sault, North Bay and Los Angles. In 1966 he returned to the Sault and opened “Furs by O’Pallie”. He especially enjoyed the trappers and customers from all over Algoma and the Upper Peninsula. During those years, he was active in the Queenstown Association.
Ed was also a Eucharistic Minister and a member of the Parish Council at Precious Blood Cathedral. He retired in 1996. Trips abroad and winters in Florida were enjoyed; and every summer was spent at the cottage in Brimley, which was the family “Gathering Place”.
Cremation has taken place. At Ed’s request there will be no visitation. A private family service will be held at a later date.
Memorial donations to the SAH or the charity of your choice would be appreciated.
Much gratitude to CCAC, staff at 3B-SAH, and especially to Dr. Sam Fratesi for his diligent care and concern.
