It is with a heavy heart and deep regret that the Sault Buskerfest Committee announces that the annual street festival will be on hiatus in 2014. For the past decade, the Sault Buskerfest Committee has proudly presented the city’s most unique and engaging annual festival, hosting professional street performers from around the globe for three days of free family entertainment. The decision to suspend the event for a year is necessary in order to continue to provide the calibre of festival the Sault public has become accustomed to.
“This decision was a difficult one. Buskerfest is very dear to myself and everyone involved,” said Donna Hopper, chair, Sault Ste. Marie Buskerfest Board of Directors. “Unfortunately, the Buskerfest Committee volunteer base was stretched to the point where it would be far too taxing to properly present an event of this scope.”
It’s important to note that Buskerfest’s hiatus has nothing to do with funding shortfalls or lack of community support. In fact, the Sault Buskerfest Committee has already confirmed a 2015 title sponsorship commitment from the United Steelworkers – District 6. USW – District 6 graciously supported Buskerfest in 2012 and 2013, and their commitment to events such as Buskerfest is commendable.
While Buskerfest’s absence may leave a hole this summer festival season, look for the event to return bigger, better, and more awe-inspiring in 2015. Anyone wishing to volunteer for the Sault Buskerfest Committee or sit on the Sault Ste. Marie Buskerfest Board of Directors is encouraged to contact us at [email protected] with contact information, event planning experience, and any related questions.
The Sault Buskerfest Committee would like to thank the community for its dedication and support over the past 10 years, and we look forward to seeing everyone in 2015!
