Over the past several weeks Fire Services has responded to numerous open air burning complaints throughout the City. As a result, several 90 day suspensions rescinding burning approval have been issued.
Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services would like to remind the public that all Open Air Burning requires approval and failure to do so may result in fines. For those existing permit holders, failure to strictly adhere to the guidelines as stated on the permit, may result in an immediate 90 day suspension or depending on circumstance, a permanent revocation of approval, up to an including fines.
“The majority of the complaints are a result of errant smoke”, stated Assistant Chief – Paul Milosevich. “Common courtesy to neighbours is expected. Permit holders need to be aware of smoke travel and respect their neighbours, when enjoying their fire.”
Open Air Burning permits can be obtained by calling 705-949-9898 between the hours of 8:30 am to 4:00 pm, Monday to Friday. Citizens can also obtain permits online, by visiting the City’s website at www.cityssm.on.ca and clicking on “My Sault Ste. Marie” to create an account. You will be asked a few simple questions that can be found on your Tax Bill. Be sure to read the guidelines page. Payments can be made using Visa or MasterCard. Please note that your permit will only become active after a Fire Services inspector has visited the property.
