It is with great pleasure that Algoma University congratulates Rachel Johnson on winning the annual Algoma University Thunderbird Award.
The Thunderbird Award is given to Algoma University Staff Association members who are nominated by their peers. The award winner must make exemplary contributions to campus life, and exude a commitment to service excellence and the University’s mission and vision. The final decision is then made by the Award Committee.

Darla Pirillo, the Director of Human Resources at the University, highlighted Johnson’s attributes and strong work ethic. “This year’s recipient, Rachel, received endorsements from her peers in various departments across the University. Rachel can be described as someone with an ongoing commitment to go ‘above and beyond’ by ensuring the success of numerous special events and activities in support of the University’s institutional image.”
Johnson is the Varsity Sports Coordinator for the Algoma University Thunderbirds Varsity Athletics Program. In her position, she has played a vital role in helping the University make the large transition from the Ontario Collegiate Athletics Association (OCAA) to the Ontario University Athletics (OUA).
From juggling administrative tasks, to supporting the operational needs of the varsity athletics program and the George Leach Centre (GLC), Johnson is always willing to put in the extra effort to ensure the success of the varsity athletic and recreational programming at the University. This year alone, she was also instrumental in the University’s Cancer Awareness Weekend, and helped the University raise $5,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society. Amidst the weekend event, she also voluntarily cut her hair at halftime, donating her hair to Locks of Love.
Johnson also assists with other large University events, including the President’s Gala, Induction, and Convocation. Her attention to detail and positive attitude have made lasting impacts on such social gatherings.
The announcement was made at the University’s annual staff and faculty Summerfest at Bell’s Point Beach yesterday.
