Two months ago the CCGS Constable Carriere was officially dedicated in Sault Ste. Marie. On Wednesday, the Canadian Coast Guard Ship was open to the public as it docked at Bondar Park.
The Canadian Coast Guard is responsible for operation and care of the ship, while the RCMP is responsible for the law enforcement on public waterways.
The new ship is on patrol and docked Wednesday for an open house to let the public know what the two agencies do and work together on the waterways. The vessel is named after Constable Carriere who was a member of the RCMP stationed in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. Carriere died November 30, 1997 while conducting an underwater search of a boat believed to have been smuggling illegal drugs. The Ship will head back out Thursday.
