For decades, Sault Ste. Marie shoppers headed north to Northern Avenue and K-Mart for everyday specials and one of the city’s largest department stores in its day. In the mid 1990’s the store became a new second location for Canadian retailer, Zellers. That store closed in the Spring of 2013.
Now SaultOnline.com has learned that a major retailer is interested in the location. Maybe.
Lowe’s, a major retail chain that is in direct competition with Home Depot could be moving into the 91,000 square foot location. A tender for renovations for the Northern Ave., location closed yesterday. There’s been no confirmation from the Canadian headquarters, though a deal could be reached soon.
Lowe’s opened its first three stores in Canada on December 10, 2007, in Hamilton, Brampton and Brantford. On February 1, 2008, they opened three more stores in Toronto, East Gwillimbury, Lowe’s has over 33 locations in Canada.
i’m disappointed too…we don’t need another home improvement store
We absolutely do NOT need another lumber store! We DESPERATELY need more stores that sell clothes for real women, bedding, etc.
Do we really need another hardware type store? Kinda disappointed
