Cindy Ross, manager of the Sault Ste. Marie Humane Society hopes the “wet dog” smell is kept at bay Saturday as the annual Cause for Paws dog walk gets underway at Hiawatha Park.
The forecast is calling for showers and that could make things a little soggy – but the show (or walk) in this case must go on.
“It’s our biggest event, we would be in trouble without out” Ross said. The annual fundraiser for the local shelter usually attracts hundreds of dog owners and their pups with the proceeds going directly to the Humane Society to help off set the cost of the shelter such as food and care.
Registration takes place at 11am with the 2km walk starting at 12:00pm. According to the latest weather forecast, rain is expected to start Friday and last through Saturday with some clearing in the afternoon. “If it’s light rain we will continue but if it’s torrential rain we will have to re-schedule” Ross said. No other date is available at the moment.
Along with the walk comes a photo booth and prizes awarded during a prize ceremony at 1:30pm Prizes for team and individual pledge earners supported by the event sponsors will be handed out. Those who can’t attend can still pledge a shelter dog waiting for a home. Those dogs get to go for a great afternoon out of the shelter walked by volunteers. Ross reminds owners to always have their dog on a leash for the walk.
