Two new student trustees were introduced to trustees of the Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board at their monthly meeting last night.
Andrew Kenopic from St. Basil Secondary School and Matt Sparling from St. Mary’s College participated in the first meeting of their one-year term at the newly named St. Kateri Outdoor Learning Centre. Both student trustees are Grade 12 students.
“I was interested in the position because I wanted to be a significant contributor for change in my school,” said Kenopic.
“My focus is on giving the graduating class of 2015 an amazing last year and helping in the transition of students who will be moving to the new St. Mary’s College next September,” added Kenopic.
Kenopic would also like to see the evolution of student council at the new St. Mary’s College to include representatives from each grade level.
Sparling was prompted to apply for the St. Mary’s College student trustee position after attending an Ontario Catholic Student Leadership Conference in Ottawa last year.
“I learned about some of the incredible things some of the participants, who were student trustees, were able to do and the resources they had to effect change,” said Sparling.
“I am interested in encouraging students to be more engaged in their school community and also to become leaders in their school,” added Sparling.
Sparling and Kenopic will serve one-year terms as their respective school representatives.
“We are delighted to have Andrew and Matt join the Board of Trustees and serve as the voice of students,” said HSCDSB Chairperson Lindsay Liske.
