Sault Ste. Marie could have a new tv newsroom if an application by Shaw Media is approved by the CRTC.

Shaw announced today that its tv division Global TV wants to launch a  new coast to coast network of local news channels to be called GlobalNews1 much in the vein as the three other national news services currently offered by CBC, CTV and SunTV,  Global News1 would be community focused  backed up with a national feed.

Sault Ste. Marie is one of eight markets for the new stations along with other centres such as Fort McMurray Alberta  as well as Red Deer, Alta.;  Niagara, Mississauga and Ottawa, Ont.; Quebec City, Que. and Charlottetown, P.E.I.

Shaw said today that it wants to fill the void in local news in these new markets adding to their existing 12 stations that currently do local news.

The 24 hour specialty channel would operate on a subscription fee and allow local segments for each market. The rest of the hour would be a national news feed.

Shaw made made the proposal last week as part of its submission to the Let’s Talk TV project of the CRTC that focuses on the future of tv in Canada.

Shaw wants to roll out GlobalNews1 in 2016 with a 100 new jobs in the eight markets. The proposal needs CRTC approval.

  1. This is a great news story. Let’s make sure the Economic Development Corporation is on this so every opportunity to make it happen will be maximized. At this point, all I want to say is let’s make sure SSM jumps on this.
