Former Ward 4 City Councillor, business woman & well known community activist, Lorena Tridico has officially registered as a candidate for City Council this morning.
Tridico was born & raised in Sault Ste. Marie, to immigrant parents who have been part of the downtown business community for over 50 years. Her educational background is in Political Science & Public Relations.
She has extensive experience in community & economic development. In 2004, Tridico was one of the youth that chose to return to Sault Ste. Marie to live, work & invest. She immediately became involved in community issues, specifically those impacting Ward 4 residents & business owners. As a result of her desire to make a positive change & provide much needed leadership, she ran & was successful in her bid of becoming Ward 4’s first female City Councillor & the youngest to represent the area.
Tridico has a well established reputation of being a tenacious grass roots leader, recognized by the Ward & community for having a proven track record of effectively mobilizing neighbourhoods & community groups to deal with issues impacting their areas. She was known for hosting public consultations during her term on council ensuring the voice of residents & business owners of Ward 4 were heard. While on council, Tridico was known for asking for recoded votes, voting against all 4 budgets which saw tax increases & often standing alone on controversial decisions impacting the community.
Since 2010, Tridico has remained committed to Ward 4 residents & the community by staying heavily involved in charitable organizations & issues impacting its residents. She is an active member of the Sault Ste. Marie Ratepayers Association & Board Member of the Calabrians Multicultural Society Inc. which are currently in the process of establishing a Cultural & Entertainment Centre in Ward 4.
Tridico states “Under the current leadership, residents of Ward 4 & the community have witnessed elected officials continuously raising taxes causing citizens to be fearful of being taxed out of their homes & many small businesses struggling to keep their doors open.” Tridico is concerned that many of these elected officials have either been unwilling or incapable of balancing budgets without raising taxes.
The 2014 budget saw council members voting for 0% increase in taxes. Tridico is of the opinion that they did so because it was an election year. In choosing to deplete the City’s reserves, she believes that the current City Councillors failed to do their due diligence by not making the necessary cuts to spending.
“I am not interested in being a career politician. I have always been a strong advocate for term limits. In order for Sault Ste. Marie, in particular Ward 4 to move forward, change is necessary. I believe this is where our community is headed & I believe that the residents of Ward 4 are ready for this change. I offer an alternative, a credible alternative. In 2006, I was very fortunate to have been given the opportunity to represent Ward 4 as a City Councillor. During this time, I was able to gain a tremendous amount of experience, experience that will prove beneficial as part of the next generation in municipal politics. I have strong leadership & it is my desire to represent the citizens of Ward 4 & this community as their City Councillor. On October 27, 2014, it is my hope that the residents of Ward 4 will send a clear message of support & elect me at their City Councillor.”
Lorena Tridico’s platform focuses on progressive leadership encompassing community & economic development, fiscal responsibility & open & transparent representation.
