Habitat for Humanity Celebrates 10 years of Local Impact, Gears Up for 2015 Home Build
October 6, 2014 is World Habitat Day, a day designated by the United Nations to reflect on housing security issues around the world and to celebrate and showcase the successes of Habitat for Humanity in addressing the need for safe, decent, affordable housing around the world. At Habitat for Humanity Sault Ste Marie & Area we are excited to celebrate 10 years of local impact. 7 Families; 19 Children; Habitat home ownership has been the hand up to brighter futures for local families for 10 years, since our first partner family received the keys to their home in October of 2004. The Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation’s 2012 study on the impact of Habitat Homeownership confirmed our highest hopes- Habitat Partner Families, after moving into their Habitat Homes, show improved outcomes in several important areas, from the tangible (children’s grades improve!) to the inspirational (healthier, happier families).
“It has been 10 wonderful, stress-free years that we have owned our house. We have had the honour of building this house from the ground up and also building so many memories…over the past 10 years [we have] celebrated so many milestones. All three of the girls graduated from the same elementary school. Two have graduated high school and then college. All three girls are thriving, in life and in school”.
– Katrina, Mother, Partner Family #1
In celebration of 10 years of local impact, Habitat for Humanity Sault Ste Marie and Area has launched the Hope Builder Catalogue- a symbolic gift catalogue where community members can donate materials needed for our upcoming build. Featured in the Hope Builder gift catalogue is an inspiring story about our 1st Partner Family. Read more about what a Habitat Home has meant for them when you visit www.habitatsault.ca and help build with us.
As we take this time to reflect on the tremendous impact Habitat has had in Sault Ste Marie over the past 10 years, we are overwhelmed by the sheer volume of support Habitat has received. The generosity of the citizens of Sault Ste Marie is something we can all be proud of- for the tireless energy of our volunteers, the ongoing support of those who have donated and continue to do so, we thank you. To our corporate partners, thank you, we are proud to work with you. Together we will continue to build a stronger community.
“Habitat is all about community- bringing together ordinary people to work towards a common goal and social good.” says Amie Woods, Communications, Marketing & Fund Development Manager at Habitat. ‘As we gear up for our next home build this coming spring, we welcome new volunteers and community partners to join us in this truly life changing work”.
Construction on Habitat Home #8 begins in the spring of 2015. To learn more visit www.habitatsault.ca and #JoinTheBuild
