The Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board (HSCDSB) has organized a Homecoming Weekend October 9 to 13 for all graduates of the Catholic school system in Sault Ste. Marie and area.
Homecoming Weekend will feature a variety of activities that alumni of our Catholic schools can take in over five days as part of the Thanksgiving long weekend. On Thursday evening, Homecoming Weekend tips off with girls high school basketball. Friday will see Alumni Pub Nights held at three locations. A senior football game highlights Saturday’s activities, while on Sunday, a gala at Grand Gardens North will celebrate Theatre SMC’s 25th anniversary. The weekend will culminate with a city-wide mass on Monday at 10:00 a.m. at the Essar Centre with Bishop Plouffe presiding. The theme for the mass is ‘Serving as One’, with dry and canned food donations accepted for distribution to local food banks. A brunch will follow the mass at The Grand Gardens.
“We are hoping that the activities of this coming weekend will provide an opportunity for our former students and staff to reconnect with old friends and celebrate Catholic education,” said HSCDSB Director of Education, John Stadnyk.
“Our Homecoming Weekend committees have tried to offer everyone something that may rekindle the spirit they had during their high school years. This weekend is also the formal launch of our ‘As One’ Campaign, which is designed to enhance our arts and athletics facilities at the new St. Mary’s College,” added Stadnyk.
‘As One’ is a fundraising campaign to raise four million dollars to outfit a five-hundred-seat state-of-the-art performing arts theatre and an artificial turf field and rubberized track for SMC athletics.
