East Algoma OPP reminds motorists to be on the lookout for wildlife when they are travelling on our highways. According to the Ministry of Transportation there are two peak times of the year when wildlife are more prevalent on the highways.
In the spring, May and June are peak months and in the fall October, November and December are peak months. Avoid if possible driving at dusk and dawn as this is when most wildlife collisions occur.
There are a number of precautions motorists can do to help avoid a collision with an animal. This includes constantly scanning the road ahead from shoulder to shoulder, reduce your speed when you observe an animal and use high beams at night to help look for animals. When you see an animal on the highway, stop your vehicle and let them cross, never assume they will move out of the way.
