It wasn’t the mob of crowds pushing and shoving to be first to get great deals, but the second Black Friday in Sault Ste. Marie certainly filled the parking lots of area malls and other stores Friday morning.

Canadians, it seems are a lot more patient and well behaved compared to Americans and even British shoppers who now take advantage of one of the busiest shopping days for retail.

The concept is relatively new to this side of the border, the Black Friday sales have always been a big deal in the U.S. and marks the official start to the holiday shopping season, the day after the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday.

“We were concerned about the sales across the river and the 7am opening, but it’s been pretty steady since 7am” said Crystal Morettin, manager of Campus Crew in the Station Mall. “I’m actually expecting bigger crowds on the weekend, when people are off work, mind you we had several come in before they went to work today”

Morettin believes now that Canadians have had a taste of Black Friday sales, the annual shopping event is here to stay and gives Canadians a reason to shop locally instead of heading across to Sault Michigan. Campus Crew among others had sale items as much as 80% off – something most Canadians usually don’t see until after Christmas with Boxing Day sales.

It wasn’t just clothing and other Christmas items up for grabs though, even big ticket items like snowmachines and ATV’s were discounted at Rivercity Sports on Great Northern Road.

“This is our first Black Friday sale” explained Jeremy Vanhoek “It’s been pretty busy here all day”

Many retail stores whether in a mall or stand alone store on Queen Street rely heavily on Christmas sales “it’s the be all and end all, it’s when you make budget , typically if a store hasn’t made budget during the year they will during the month of December” Morettin said.

“we have had traffic here all day long, it’s been fantastic” Melissa Cuglietta the Marketing and Promotions director at Station Mall told Saultonline.com on a busy Friday afternoon. “Pretty much every store in the mall is participating either just today or all weekend long”
