With the Soo Thunderbirds leading the season series 6-0 against the Blind River Beavers, tonight marked the seventh meeting between the first and last place squads and a T-Birds win tonight would clinch the Provenzano Cup.

Joey Miller entered tonight’s contest with ninety seven career points and was only three away from hitting the one hundred milestone.

Rookie forward Matt Caruso put the Soo up 1-0 with his sixth of the season at 7:28 from Nick Tassone and Hounds second rounder Boris Katchouk. Nick Tassone’s fifteenth of the season at 9:25 put the T-Birds up 2-0 with Boris Katchouk picking up his second helper along with overage Defenceman Connor Dea. Matt Caruso’s second of the night and seventh of the season put the Soo up 1:21 later from Joey Miller and Brett Jeffries. Then at the 15:26 mark of the first, 2012 Hounds sixth rounder Jaren Bellini would notch his sixteenth goal on the powerplay with Joey Miller picking up his second assist of the game.

The T-Birds took a 4-0 lead into the second period and with Joey Miller picking up a pair of assists in the first put his career point totals to ninety nine. Just 3:56 into the middle frame, it would be Nathan Hebert getting his fifth of the season on the powerplay from Anthony Miller and Jaren Bellini. The Soo took a 6-0 lead after the second courtesy of a powerplay goal by Anthony Miller giving him his seventh of the season at 17:12 from Joey Miller and Brett Jeffries.

Joey Miller’s three assists through two periods of play had given him one hundred career points as he was not done yet heading into the final frame.

After Austin Lamont’s goal just over two minutes into the first broke Kment’s shutout cutting the lead to 6-1, assistant captain Matthew Mitchell would strike back for the T-Birds just nine seconds later with his third of the season from Joey Ogden to give the Soo a 7-1 lead. Joey Ogden’s fifth of the season at 7:28 put the Soo up 8-1 with assists going to Anthony Miller along with Joey Miller, giving him his fourth helper of the game. Boris Katchouk notched his fourth of the season at 8:55 with Brett Jeffries and Nick Tassone drawing assists to give the T-Birds an eight goal lead. Joey Ogden would get his first career two goal game with his second of the night and sixth of the season at 11:09 with assists going Joey Miller, giving him five on the night along with Connor Dea.

With the Soo’s seventh victory over the Beavers, they have once again for this season clinched the Carmen Provenzano Memorial Trophy with a 10-1 victory over Blind River tonight at the Blind River Community Centre.
Joey Miller finished off the night with five helpers while Brian Kment was in goal for the win.

The Thunderbirds return to action on Friday, December 5th when the Cochrane Crunch come to the John Rhodes Centre at 7:30 for their first ever visit to the Lock City.

Note: Thunderbirds rookie forward Nick Sicoly was not in the lineup tonight for the Soo as he was called up for his first career OHL game with the Guelph Storm at the Essar Centre vs the Soo Greyhounds. Sicoly finished the game held of the scoresheet and was a +/- 0.
