With a great number of fans braving the blustery winter conditions they came to see Team Jacobs compete in the National Grand Slam of Curling, and you know who the favorite was going to be by the applause and bell ringing whenever the 2014 Olympic Gold Medalists made a fantastic shot.
Team Jacobs with Skip Brad Jacobs, Lead Ryan Harnden, 2nd EJ Harnden and 3rd Ryan Fry cruised to a 9-3 victory over Team Kean with Skip Mark Kean, Lead Scott Howard, 2nd David Mathers and 3rd Mathew Camm from Stoney Creek, ON.
Jacobs would steal 3 in the first end of the draw and would match the scores by Kean until the 5th end when Jacobs scored a deuce doubling the single for Team Casey in the 4th. For the 7th end, Team Jacbos would add 3 to their tally making the final score 9-3 for Jacobs with the 8th end not played.
On the other four sheets in play for Draw 1 Glenn Howard from Penetanguishene, ON defeated Adam Casey from Charlottetown, PEI in 7 ends of play by a score of 8 to 4. With the hammer to start the game Howard layed 3 in the first end, score 2 in the 3rd end while Casey only scored a single in the 2nd.
Kevin Koe from Calgary, AB doulbed up on Peter De Cruz from Geneva, SUI by a score of 6-3. Koe with the hammer in the 1st end scored a deuce while holding De Cruz to a single in the 2nd. With the hammer De Cruz would make a comeback in the 4th end scoring 2 but Koe stole single points in the 7th and 8th ends by Koe and win the draw.
Jeff Stoughton from Winnipeg, MB won over John Shuster from Duluth, USA 7 to 3. The scoring for each of the ends was even until Stoughton stole singles in the 5th and 6th ends and a deuce in the 7th end for the win.
Mike McEwen from Winnipeg, MB handed Heath McCormick from Blaine, USA their first loss by a score of 7-4. With the hammer McEwen scored a deuce in the 1st end and 3 in the 3rd end while holding McCormick to a single in the 2nd. McEwen stole singles in the 4th and 5th ends but McCormick would score 2 in the 6th and steal a single in the 7th end.
Draw 2 continues on Thursday at 9:00 am, with Draw 3 at 12:30, Draw 4 at 4:00 and Draw 5 at 7:30.
