After edging the Kapuskasing Flyers last night 2-1 at the Sports Palace, the Soo Thunderbirds Midgets were looking to make it six wins in a row as they travelled to Timmins this afternoon to take on the Majors.
The Soo led 1-0 after the first period courtesy of Brad Thrower’s eighth goal of the season at 13:52 with Brendan Gillis picking up the lone helper. Lucas Millar’s fourth of the season from Matt Murray at 15:51 put the T-Birds up by two. Then with just one second left to go in the middle frame, it would be Matt MacKay getting his sixth goal on the powerplay with assists going to Brendan Gillis and Matt Murray to put the Soo up 3-0 after two.
The Soo scored five times in the third starting with a shorthanded unassisted goal by Brendan Gillis at 1:10 to put his team up 4-0. Another shorthanded goal for the Soo would come just 1:14 later as Jared Fanti notched his sixth of the season unassisted to put the T-Birds ahead 5-0. Brendan Gillis would make it a 6-0 Soo lead at 12:17 getting his second of the game and sixteenth of the season with Zach Senecal picking up the lone helper. Brendan Gillis would complete his third career Great North Midget League hat trick at 15:39 on the powerplay with assists going to Jonathan Dyer along with Matt Murray to put the Soo up by seven. An unassisted goal by Matt MacKay giving him his second of the game with just 1:53 left to go in regulation rounded out the scoring for the Soo as they went on to defeat the Timmins Majors by a score of 8-0 this afternoon at the McIntyre arena.
Joey Roberts was in goal to record the franchise’s first shutout while Brendan Gillis got his first career five point game with three goals and two assists. Next action for the T-Birds is Wednesday, November 19th at 7:30 when they visit the Gerry McCrory (Countryside) Arena #1 to take on the Sudbury Nickel Capital Wolves.
