“What is that – is that a moose?” asked Craig MacGillivray, pointing to the middle of Weckstrom Lake near Searchmont. “Wait – that’s a boat. That’s my boat!” It was late fall and the water was filled with ice chunks. But Craig convinced two friends to hop in a canoe and rescue the boat while he shouted instructions from the shoreline. That was Craig – always bringing adventure and stories to those lucky enough to know him.
Craig passed away from cancer at ARCH Hospice in Sault Ste. Marie with his family by his side, on December 2, 2014, at the age of 73. Loving father of Lauren and Jenna. Son of the late Bill and Kay. Cherished brother of Randy (Linda), Don (Barb), Carol (late). Fondly remembered by his nephews Adam and Derek, and many friends from his years of teaching, as well as his golf, curling and gymnastics pursuits.
While perhaps best known as a fearless outdoorsman he was also a voracious reader, artist and lifelong academic – after teacher’s college he earned his master’s in counselling and recently completed a university astronomy course just for fun.
The family wishes to thank the workers, volunteers, patients and families at ARCH for your care, kinship and kindness.
At Craig’s request, there will be no funeral. A celebration of life will be held at Root River Golf Club, Barsanti’s Restaurant this Friday, Dec. 5, 2014, from noon – 3 p.m.
Donations to ARCH are encouraged and will be entrusted to O’Sullivan Funeral Home and Cremation Centre (705) 759-8456.
