After going 0-2-1 last weekend vs the Michigan Nationals, the first place Soo Thunderbirds Midgets resumed league action Wednesday night against the second place Sudbury Nickel Capital Wolves at the Gerry McCrory Arena.
Sudbury led 1-0 after the first courtesy of Ryder Thususka’s second of the season, unassisted at 6:41. Matt MacKay’s powerplay goal and tenth of the season at 5:53 tied things up at one with assists going to Ryan Mulligan and Brendan Gillis. Sudbury took a 2-1 lead after the second on the powerplay at 7:50, courtesy of Alex Guido’s seventh from Kyle Liinamaa and Jake Stos.
In the third period, it would be the Soo coming back with three straight goals. Zach Senecal’s fourteenth goal at 9:04 on the powerplay tied things up at two with assists going to Brad Thrower and Jason Bednarski. Just 2:52 later, the Soo took the lead for the first time on the night with Brad Thrower scoring his twelfth from Zach Senecal and Jared Fanti to give the Soo a 3-2 lead. Zach Senecal’s unassisted goal into the empty net rounded out the scoring with just thirty three seconds to go in regulation as the Soo came back in the third and doubled up on the Sudbury Nickel Capital Wolves by a 4-2 score. Zach Senecal finished off the night with two goals and one assist giving him back to back two goal games.
Joey Roberts who was called up by the NOJHL’s Soo Thunderbirds last night to serve as a backup to Mario Culina, recorded the victory in goal tonight. The Soo will now return home on Friday, December 19th at 6:30 to take on the New Liskeard Cubs from the Rankin Arena.
