Six was the number of goals the Soo Thunderbirds have scored on Saturday vs Sudbury and the same number was scored this afternoon. After a big 6-2 win on Saturday vs the Sudbury Nickel Barons, the T-Birds headed into afternoon action at the Rhodes doubling up on the Abitibi Eskimos 6-3. It also marked the debut of newly acquired forward Devon Shell, after being picked up in a deal with the GOJHL’s Cambridge Winter Hawks yesterday.
Joey Miller opened the scoring at 5:22 into the first, with his tenth of the season from Jaren Bellini and Caleb Boman. Brendan Locke tied it up with his twenty sixth from Patrick Picard at 11:17. Eric Hillock’s fourteenth of the season, on the power play, put the Soo back in front 2-1 from Jaren Bellini and Matt Busby at 13:25. Hillock’s fourteenth also tied his season totals from a year ago. Just nineteen ticks later, it would be Brennan Roy’s sixteenth from Tristan Salesse and Brendan Locke, tying things up at two through one period.
Just 2:56 into the second, it would be Nick Tassone getting his twenty second from Nathan Hebert putting the Soo back ahead 3-2. Boris Katchouk’s sixth from Matt Pinder and Connor Dea put the Soo ahead by two through forty.
Nick Tassone’s second of the game and twenty third of the season from Boris Katchouk and Nick Sicoly put the Soo up 5-2. 1:25 later, it would be Abitibi cutting the lead to 5-3 courtesy of Tristan Salese’s tenth from Jake Holland. Then with just one second left in the game, it would be Brett Jeffries sealing the deal into the empty net with his seventh of the season, unassisted as the T-Birds went on to a 6-3 victory over the Abitibi Eskimos.
Mario Culina, made twenty one stops for his league leading sixteenth victory.
Next action for the T-Birds is Wednesday, January 14th when they travel to Copper Cliff to take on the Sudbury Nickel Barons. Game time is 7:30 from McClelland Arena.
