Canal Village Plan “Dead”

Just two weeks after showing Sault Ste. Marie city council their plans for the property known as “the Gateway site”

The developer who proposed the Canal Village District is now pulling out of the idea.

canal-districtIn a letter to council, the legal firm representing the develop informed the City that the developer is suspending plans for the waterfront site in light of recent news concerning an association with Shaun Rothberg or Rootenburg. News broke last week that Rothberg who was hired by the Algoma Public Health as interim Financial officer. Rothberg was present at the last city council meeting with the investors from the Canal Village District .

In the letter from the legal office of Laidlaw, Paciocco, Dumanski reads, “We have been asked by our client to inform you of its decision to suspend its interest in the proposed development of the Gateway site”

The proposal called for a mixed use of residential, commercial and recreational elements including an indoor soccer pitch and a new YMCA.

The latest  news makes for about 5 such developers in the last 20 years  that have proposed ideas for the site.
