Emergency Well Start May Result In Brown Water

A recent power interruption at the Shannon Well site caused the pumping station to go offline. The PUC is currently initiating its Emergency Well Start-Up Procedures for the Shannon pumping station. This may result in discoloured water for some PUC customers in the east end of the city. Unfortunately, it is impossible to predict exactly who will get discoloured water or when.

If you do experience discoloured water, the PUC recommends you flush the cold water faucets (preferably a laundry tub or bath tub without screens or filters) for up to 15 minutes maximum to clear the lines. Do not run the hot water, in order to avoid filling your hot water tank with discoloured water.

If the water does not clear up after 15 minutes of flushing, wait 30 minutes and try again. If the water does not clear up after two 15 minute flushing cycles, please call PUC Customer Service at 705-759-6522 Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and 705-759-6555 at all other times.

The PUC apologizes for the lack of notification regarding the Emergency Start-Up Process however due to the nature of this emergency, immediate action is required. The PUC appreciates your patience and understanding while crews work to restore Sault Ste. Marie’s water production system to normal levels.
