The Soo Thunderbirds Midgets concluded their home weekend series this morning vs the Nickel City Sons at the Rhodes and with the T-Birds winning both games on Friday and Saturday, they were looking for a sweep in their second last home game of the season.

Joel Grandbois’ four point game (1g 3a) led the Sons to a 6-2 win this morning over the Soo.

The Sons scored three times in the first 9:17 into the first period. Tristan Simeoni’s eighth at 2:30 from Makenzie MacMillan and Joel Grandbois put the Sons ahead 1-0. At 7:22, it would be Mackenzie MacMillan’s shorthanded goal and seventeenth of the season from Joel Grandbois putting the visitors up by two. Thomas Hayden’s unassisted goal and sixth of the season at 9:17 put Nickel City up by three. Then with just eleven seconds left in the first, it would be Brendan Gillis’s power play goal and twenty fifth of the season from Jonathan Dyer and Matt MacKay cutting the lead to 3-1 after twenty.

Jason Bednarski’s sixth at 11:48 put the Soo back in it from Zach Senecal and Jared Fanti. Joel Grandbois’ twenty second at 15:43 from Makenzie MacMillan and Tristan Simeoni on the power play put Nickel City up 4-2. Thomas Hayden’s second unassisted goal of the game and seventh of the season put the Sons up 5-2, which also spelled the end of Joey Roberts time in net, as he was replaced by goaltender Zach Flesher.

With the Soo trailing by three after two, it would be Connor Tessier’s fifteenth at 8:52, rounding out the scoring from Brayden Henri and Joel Grandbois as the T-Birds fell to the Nickel City Sons 6-2 in this morning’s action at the Rhodes.

Next action for the Soo is Wednesday, January 28th at 7:30, when they travel to Sudbury to take on the Nickel Capital Wolves from Gerry McCrory Arena.
