The Canadian Cancer Society Algoma Community Office is making some exciting changes to its Relay For Life this June. Among the changes will be a move from a 12 hour overnight event to a 6 hour evening event.
Relay For Life in Sault Ste. Marie will take place at the John Rhodes Community Center on Saturday, June 19th from 7:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m.
The changes are designed to attract more people to the event, particularly families. Participants can join the event as individuals, or as part of a team of friends, relatives or coworkers.
“We are excited to be bringing the ‘relay’ back to Relay For Life and to be evolving and strengthening our signature event,” said Rodney Buzdygan, manager of the Algoma Community Office. “We’re looking to engage more members of our community in the Canadian Cancer Society’s important work of creating more survivors every day. We could not accomplish this important work without the dedication of our generous participants, donors, volunteers, sponsors and staff. We are very thankful for their past support and invite everyone to be part of Relay For Life in Sault Ste. Marie this June.”
Back by popular demand…relay batons! At Relay For Life in 2015, participants will pass the baton as they walk the track. Research shows that physical activity can help prevent cancer; therefore participants will be encouraged to set a distance goal for the event (e.g. 1 lap to 10K) on an individual or team basis. Also new for 2015, participants will have the opportunity to attend pre-event walking sessions led by a fun, energetic walking crew.
Money raised through Relay For Life helps patients and their families living with cancer through research, support and information services. In 2014 over 850 participants raised over $232,000 for the Sault Relay For Life. The 2015 fundraising goal for the Sault Ste. Marie Relay is $270,000.
Teams are encouraged to register before January 31st in order to pay last years’ fee of $10. Fees will increase after January 31st. You can register online at www.relayforlife.ca/saultstemarie, or pick up registration forms from the Canadian Cancer Society office at 390 McNabb Street, Sault Ste. Marie ON.
