Algoma Public Health is delighted to continue providing the Northern Fruit and Vegetable Program (NFVP) to all elementary and intermediate schools throughout the district of Algoma.
The NFVP is a unique program in Ontario that supplies 2 servings of no cost fresh produce each week to elementary and intermediate students, with an emphasis on Ontario-grown produce. It also provides schools with educational materials to help increase awareness amongst school-aged children and their families about the importance of vegetables and fruit, and regular physical activity, for good health and the prevention of chronic diseases.
“The program helps to create environments that support healthy eating habits” says Lindsay Fera, Registered Dietitian and Northern Fruit and Vegetable Program Coordinator for Algoma. “The program runs from January to June and gives school-aged children in Algoma the opportunity to try new vegetables and fruit with their peers.”
Algoma Public Health is very fortunate to work with committed partners, such as the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, the Ontario Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association, Massey Wholesale and all elementary and intermediate schools throughout the Algoma District to run this successful program.
Great idea to keep this going and I hope all involved are accountable for proper safe food handling procedures.
