Heading into tonight’s action on an eleven game point streak, the Soo Thunderbirds were looking to pull off a big win at the Essar Centre while trying to maintain first place, as the Powassan Voodoos came to town riding an eight game losing streak.

It would be an offensive first period with four goals combined as Joey Miller’s eleventh put the Soo up 1-0 just 2:10 in from Devin Shell and Brian Kment. Kyle Moore tied things up at one with his sixteenth from Steve Harland at 9:17. Matt Pinder’s thirteenth put the T-Birds back in front 2-1 at 15:53, from Brett Jeffries and Boris Katchouk. Steve Harland’s power play goal and team leading thirty first of the season from Brendan D’Agostino and Nicolas Proulx tied things up at two with thirty one seconds to go.
With the teams tied at two heading into the second, it would be newly acquired Jake Staples getting his fifth from Jacob Erwin and Mike Silveri just 1:12 in, to put Powassan ahead 3-2. 1:35 later, it would be the Soo tying it up at three, with Brett Jeffries tenth from Matt Pinder and Boris Katchouk. Joey Miller’s second of the game and twelfth of the season, from Andrew Barbeau put the Soo back ahead 4-3. Caleb Boman’s power play goal and fourth of the season from Eric Hillock and Nick Sicoly, gave the Soo some insurance at 17:07 to put them up by two through forty.
Caleb Boman would get his first career multi goal game, with his second of the night and fifth of the season from Eric Hillock at 1:57. The Soo went on to a 6-3 win over Powassan while building a two point lead over the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners for first in the NOJHL. The Miners picked up a point skating to a 2-2 tie tonight in Elliot Lake.
Brian Kment made twenty nine saves for the victory.
Next action for the T-Birds is Saturday, January 24th vs the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners at 7:30 from the John Rhodes.
