The Soo Thunderbirds and Sudbury Nickel Barons met for the sixth time this season tonight at the Rhodes and for the first time in 2015, the T-Birds had a full lineup at home which saw Nick Sicoly, Boris Katchouk and Brian Kment all come back after being recalled by their respective Ontario Hockey League clubs.
Sudbury would take the lead 1-0 just 1:07 into the first courtesy of Ryan Mooney’s fourth of the season from Christopher Rossi and Joel Lemay. Soo, Michigan product Eric Hillock tied things up with his thirteenth from Caleb Boman at 7:18. Nick Tassone’s twenty first from Nathan Hebert at 12:15 put the Soo in front 2-1. Jaren Bellini hit the twenty goal plateau at 13:59 from Boris Katchouk and Joey Miller to put the Soo up 3-1 after twenty minutes. Three goals against spelled the end of the night for Nickel Barons goalie Kevin Labelle as he was then replaced by Jesse Morin with just over six minutes to play in the first.
Captain Anthony Miller’s fifteenth goal, unassisted gave the Soo a 4-1 lead through two. August Jarecki’s power play goal and tenth of the season from Matt Neault and Kyle Fransen at 10:26 into the third would cut the Soo’s lead to 4-2. Brett Jeffries sixth from Matt Pinder and Matt Caruso put the Soo up 5-2 at 12:54. Then just fifty one seconds later it would be rookie forward Nick Sicoly rounding out the scoring with his fourteenth from Nick Tassone and Nathan Hebert as the Thunderbirds went on to defeat the Sudbury Nickel Barons 6-2.
Net minder Brian Kment, who had not seen action since December 13th picked up his thirtieth career victory making twenty one stops.
Next action for the Soo Thunderbirds will be a Sunday afternoon at 2pm when they entertain the Abitibi Eskimos at the John Rhodes Community Centre.
