By Matt Stefano

The Soo Thunderbirds wrapped up their two game road swing Friday night in Elliot Lake with a depleted lineup missing the likes of Jaren Bellini, Nathan Hebert and Joey Miller who was serving game one of a one game suspension.

Elliot Lake led 2-0 after the first courtesy of goals by Aaron Carmichael and Shane Woolsey. Matt Busby, who just turned eighteen on Tuesday scored his third of the season on the power play just 2:20 into the second from Eric Hillock and Nick Tassone to cut the lead to 2-1. Right after Nick Legault’s goal 1:23 later put the Cats up 3-1, it would be Boris Katchouk getting his seventh from Brett Jeffries and David Radke at 6:48 to cut the lead to 3-2. Nate Sepeda’s power play goal with just forty seconds left in the middle frame put the Wildcats up 4-2 after forty.

Just fifty seven seconds into the third it would be Boris Katchouk getting his second of the game and eighth of the season on the power play from Matt Caruso to cut the lead to 4-3. Cole Hepler gave Elliot Lake a 5-3 lead at 2:21, but the Thunderbirds did not quit as Matt Caruso would get his tenth on the power play from David Radke and Matt Pinder cutting the lead to 5-4 at 6:57. Brett Jeffries tied the game at five with his ninth at 16:22 from Boris Katchouk and Matt Busby as we headed into extra time.

Cole Hepler’s second of the game in overtime and third point of the night just 1:47 into overtime gave Elliot Lake a 6-5 victory over the Soo. Nick Legault led the way offensively for the Cats with a goal and three helpers.

Mario Culina made twenty stops in goal for the loss.

The T-Birds return to action next Friday on January 23rd when they take on the Powassan Voodoos at 7:30 from the Essar Cen
