Wednesday night the Soo Thunderbirds Midgets were looking to snap a one game losing streak, as they were in Sudbury to take on the Nickel Capital Wolves. It also marked their final road game for the month of January.
Sudbury led 1-0 after the first, courtesy of Eric Paquette’s power play goal and eighth of the season at 10:59 from Anthony Pelletier and Kirk Trayner.
Alex Morin got his first goal of the season and first of his Great North Midget League career unassisted at 8:55 of the second to tie things at one. Thunderbirds scoring leader Brendan Gillis would put his team up 2-1 with his twenty sixth at 13:28 on the power play from Jared Fanti and Brad Thrower. The Paquette show continued right after that at 17:24, as Eric Paquette’s second goal of the game on the power play and ninth of the season from Kyle Liinimaa and Anthony Pelletier tied things up at two through two periods.
Jake Stos’ tenth from Duncan Stewart and Kyle Mallette put Sudbury up 3-2 at 6:10 into the third. A couple of empty netters were added afterwards. First it would be Alex Guido’s ninth unassisted with just 1:13 left, then it would be Austin Burke’s sixth unassisted with just forty seconds to go, as the Nickel Capital Wolves went on to defeat the T-Birds 5-2 at the Gerry McCrory Arena.
Joey Roberts was in goal for the Soo’s second straight loss.
The T-Bird midgets will return to action this Saturday, January 31st, for their final regular season home game as they take on the Kapuskasing Flyers. Puck drop is scheduled for 6pm at the John Rhodes Community Centre.
