Last night it was Issac Lennox’s sudden death shootout goal giving the T-Birds an 8-7 over the Nickel City Sons on John Rhodes ice in just his fourth game played and while the team was without head coach Jim Capy during that dramatic high scoring win, he returned behind the bench tonight for the club’s second meeting of the weekend vs the Sons.
The Soo trailed 3-2 after the second period but came back to defeat the Nickel City Sons 6-4 in Saturday night’s Great North Midget League action at the Rhodes.
Nickel City would take an early 1-0 lead just thirty one seconds into the first courtesy of Tristan Simeoni’s seventh of the season from Joel Grandbois and Makenzie MacMillan. Noah Serre’s fifth tied things up at one at 12:34 from Issac Lennox (first GNML point) and Jonathan Dyer. It wouldn’t last long as Nickel City regained the lead thirteen seconds later courtesy of David Ranger’s eighth from Tyler Brisson and Nickolas Godin.
With the Soo Thunderbirds Midgets trailing 2-1 after twenty minutes, Nickel City would add to their lead at 13:02 of the second courtesy of Connor Tessier’s fourteenth from Nickolas Godin and Tyler Brisson. Lucas Millar’s seventh from Jason Bednarski and Jonathan Dyer would cut the lead to 3-2 with just 1:42 left in the second.
After trailing Nickel City 3-2 after two periods, the Soo came storming into the final frame beginning with three unanswered goals. First it would be Jakob Porco tying the game at three on the power play with his sixth just 1:32 in from Matt MacKay and Lucas Millar. Then at 3:13 it would be Noah Serre’s second of the night and sixth of the season from Matt Murray and Alex Morin putting the Soo in front for the first time. Jason Bednarski’s unassisted goal and fifth of the season at 5:59 put the Soo up 5-3. Nickolas Godin’s third of the season at 7:55 from Brayden Henri and Connor Tessier would cut the T-Birds lead to 5-4. Jared Fanti’s ninth at 11:43 from Lucas Millar and Zach Senecal would add some insurance as the Soo went on to a 6-4 victory over Nickel City. Joey Roberts was in goal for the Soo’s win.
The weekend series wraps up on Sunday, January 18th at 11am vs Nickel City at the Rhodes in the Soo’s second last home game of the regular season.
