Gary Trembinski recently competed in the second national competition of his long track speed skating season, Canada Cup 2. The competition was held in Calgary, Alberta at the Olympic Oval, Trembinski’s home training centre. Trembinski started the weekend off strong posting his first 500 meter personal best time of the season, 38.26, shaving a mere 3 one-hundredths of a second off his previous personal best, 38.29, set last season. “It felt great to finally get that first 500m PB (personal best) of the season out of the way. It was very slight, but I knew I had a lot more left in me for the rest of the weekend.”
Following that race, Trembinski managed to knock off a full second off his 1000 meter personal best, posting a time of 1:18.35. “That was my second 1000 meter PB of the season. Getting 2 personal best times in back to back races felt fantastic.”

The following day, Trembinski raced another 500m, breaking into the 37 second barrier for the first time in his skating career with a time of 37.87 seconds. With that 37.87, it gave Trembinski his best ever placing in a national competition, sitting in 14th place out of 64 skaters. “Skating across the line, looking up at the board and seeing that 37 pop up was an unbelievable feeling. I couldn’t stop smiling. When I came around the backstretch, Todd, my coach was just as pumped as I was. He gave me a high five. That’s special. When Todd gives you a high five, you know you did something right.”
