A new community event is sure to spark the interest of many science lovers this Spring in Sault Ste. Marie.
The Sault Ste. Marie Science Festival , billed as the only festival of its kind in the area kicks off it inaugural year April 28 to May 2nd.
“I think it’s great that this large group of community partners, including Science North, have come together to highlight the scientific research and initiatives happening right here in the City of Sault Ste. Marie. This festival will share a much deserved spotlight on science and technology, the innovative careers available in this field and the scientists who call our city home. I look forward to experiencing all that the festival has to offer” said Mayor Christian Provenzano at a press conference Friday at the Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre.
Seven local community partners , as well as Science North hope the festival will attract children as well as adults and seniors. Speical days are planned for each age group. The festival strives to engage audiences with hands on exhibits and demonstrations and inspire youth about Science.

The Sault Ste. Marie Science Festival partners include, Algoma University, Sault College, Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre, Entomica, Invasive Species Centre, Natural Resources Canada, -Canadian Forest Service, The Innovation Centre and Science North.
“By sparking a child’s interest in science while they are young we can expose them to the possibilities of a science-related career, and help strengthen the knowledge economy in Northern Ontario” said Sault MPP David Orazietti.
“We look forward to bringing our bluecoat brand of interactive and hands-on science delivery to the festival” Said Guy Laline, CEO of Science North.
“The science of flight inspired people like Saultite Dr. Roberta Bondar to pursue a career as an astronaut. The Bushplance Centre is pleased to participate and partner in this exciting new festival” Mike Delfre Executive Director at the CBHC.
“Through a variety of activities for all ages, our community will gain an interest in science, learn something new about science, experience science learning as fun and enjoyable and feel connected to science happening in our city” Dr. Ron Common, President of Sault College said.
The festival will take part at the Bushplane Centre and feature Adult Night – for those ages 19 and up will offer a unique event specifically designed for adults as a way to experience an intellectual evening exploring and interacting with science exhibits with a theme on flight. This licensed event will also feature live music , most other events are free admission. A Science Carnival will be a day long event where families will have the opportunity to participate in several,engaging fun and very hands-on activities . A VIP Event for Sault Science Professionals is also planned as well as Science For Seniors that will feature creatures from Entomica.
A Science Cafe with Extreme weather and water quality in Sault Ste. Marie will offer discussions on climate change and how it is impacting the Great Lakes.
