Edgar Bedard(May 10, 1924 – February 11, 2015) – It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Sir Edgar Frank Bedard.

Surrounded by family and best friends, Edgar peacefully went to join his loving wife and best friend Margaret, in the loving arms of our Lord. Loving father of Neil, Brian (Mary Coughlan), Kevin (Joyce Tangie). Grandfather of Taylor, Jamie and Josh.  Brother and brother-in-law of the late Lawrence and Mabel Bedard, late Leo and Alice Bedard, late Jenette and Ivan Swire, late Beatrice and Nicholas Mihelic, Renee and Jackie Bedard, Marjorie and Jack McPhee. Uncle and great uncle to many. Best friend of Rick and Carol Thorold, Ron and Debbie Rouleau and his adopted son Paul.

Edgar was a proud member of the Cameron Highlanders of Ottawa who went ashore on D-Day with many other brave young men.  He continued on from Juno Beach with his troop mates and took part in the liberation of France and Holland. He remained in Germany, immediately following the war, as part of the occupation force, before returning to Sault Ste. Marie and his job at Algoma Steel.

Edgar was Knighted by the Government of France on August 18, 2014 for his part in the liberation of France  during World War II.

Edgar was a Life Member of Branch 25, Royal Canadian Legion with over 65 years service. He was also a member of the Legion Band for over 50 years, with his last parade being November 11, 2014.

Edgar was an avid golfer who was known to be creative with a score card and had established a wide network of friends throughout the community, who will miss him dearly.

Edgar’s family would like to thank the staff of the Sault Area Hospital Emergency Department and ICU for their compassionate care. Special thanks to Dustin Couturier and Fern Mannarino, strangers who assisted Edgar in a time of need.

A memorial service celebrating Edgar’s life will take place Friday, February 20, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion on Great Northern Road.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Legion Poppy Fund or the Legion Band would be greatly appreciated.

Arrangements entrusted to Northwood Funeral Home Cremation and Reception Centre (942 Great Northern Road 705-945-7758).
