Crunching the Numbers of Highway 17 east

Members from the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police were hard at work in January keeping our highways safe. During the month of January while patrolling the Highway 17 corridor through East Algoma (Spanish to St. Joe Island) officers issued offence notices for the following violations.

• Eighty-three (83) speeding
• one (1) seatbelt
• two (2) careless driving and
• thirty-three (33) tickets for various violations

In addition to the above tickets officers removed three (3) impaired drivers off our roads. While conducting these traffic stops officers located five (5) drivers who were in possession of various amounts of controlled substances. This resulted in those individuals now facing criminal charges.

East Algoma OPP operations manager Staff Sergeant Riopelle would like to remind all motorists to be wary of weather and road conditions while travelling to your destination and always drive according to conditions.
