Explosion Leaves Town Without Arena

An early morning explosion at the Echo Bay Sports Complex Friday morning means the arena is closed for the season according to Echo Bay Mayor Lynn Watson.

At around 4:45am, Watson who lives three blocks away from the complex was awoken by a loud boom.
“I thought to myself, something has happened in my community”

Watson headed out and got to the arena site just around 5am as the fire department and OPP arrived.

No cause of the explosion has been determined, the Ontario Fire Marshall is still investigating.

The explosion caused extensive damage to the building.

The Sports complex is the only one in the small town east of Sault Ste. Marie, but Watson said the complex is closed, “at least for this year”

Debris from the explosion was scattered several metres around ground zero. Watson said no one was in the building at the time and no one was injured.

“Everything was fine last night, we had a few rentals, the ice was was cleaned”  Watson told SaultOnline.com

“The explosion shock several houses, as far as up the hill, we have no idea what caused it”
