Saturday night was a high scoring affair between the Soo Thunderbirds and Kapuskasing Flyers in Great North Midget League action, which saw a total of seventeen goals combined.
Tyler Minoletti opened the scoring just thirty four seconds into the first on the power play, with his twentieth
from Chad Robert and Brady Cloutier to put Kapuskasing up 1-0. Matt MacKay tied things up with his eighteenth at 7:46 from Jakob Porco and Ryan Mulligan. Zach Senecal’s sixteenth with 10:31 to go in the first put the Soo in front 2-1 from Cameron Elsby.
Graysen Vigneux’s seventh at 10:23 of the second tied things up at two, from Brady Cloutier and Sam Vigneux. Brendan Gillis’s shorthanded goal and twenty seventh of the season from Jared Fanti, put the Soo ahead 3-2 at 13:10. Gillis would then do it again shorthanded just eighteen ticks later with his second of the night and twenty eighth unassisted, to put the T-Birds ahead 4-2. Kapuskasing would cut the lead to 4-3 courtesy of Derek Goulet’s power play marker and thirty second from Brady Cloutier at 15:24. Just 1:36 later, it would be Brendan Gillis getting his natural hat trick and third short handed goal of the night from Brad Thrower to put the Soo back up by two. The goals just kept on coming thirty six seconds later as Tyler Minoletti scored his second goal of the night on the power play, unassisted to cut the lead to 5-4 after two periods of play.
After scoring three straight short handed goals in the second, Brendan Gillis scored his fourth of the game on the power play just 2:37 in from Matt Murray and Zach Senecal, to put the Soo ahead 6-4. Gillis’s fourth goal of the night also gave him his thirtieth of the season. The Flyers would once again make it a one goal game as Kyle Sanford notched his fifth goal at 3:46 on the power play from Brady Cloutier. Sanford would then strike again on the power play with his second of the game and sixth at 5:26 from Brady Clouter and Raphael Lecours to tie it up at six. Raphael Lecours fourteenth from Brady Cloutier and Graysen Vigneux put the Flyers up 7-6 at 7:04. Thirty six seconds later, it would be Zach Senecal getting his second of the night from Jonathan Dyer to tie the game up at seven. Senecal would complete the hat trick at 10:11, short handed from Jason Bednarski to put the Soo up 8-7. Tyler Minoletti would then complete his hat trick on the Flyers side of things at 12:48 on the power play from Martin Isabelle and Graysen Vigneux to tie it up at eight through regulation.
Jakob Porco’s seventh goal at 3:19 into extra time from Ryan Mulligan and Nolan Makkonen, gave the Soo a 9-8 victory over the last place Kapuskaking Flyers tonight at the Sports Palace.
Zach Flesher was in goal for the Soo’s win.
The T-Birds will close out the 2014-2015 regular season tomorrow afternoon against the Timmins Majors at 1:30 from the McIntyre Arena.
