In the first game of the High School Hockey finals between St. Mary’s Knights and St. Basil Saints, the Knights would dominate the game.  The Saints kept pace with the Knights for the first period and the first ten minutes of the second period but soon became unraveled creating turnovers and having passes that didn’t connect.

St. Mary’s would get the first goal by Mitchel Robinson but the Saints would come back a little over four minutes later to tie the game on a goal by Dom Gervasi.  Dallas Jollineau would give the Knights the lead again and at the end of the first period of play St. Mary’s led St. Basil 2 to 1.

Dom Gervasi would score his second goal of the night in the second period to tie the game at 2 a piece.  At the 4:45 mark Dallas Jollineau just came off the bench and was behind the Saints defence would get a pass from Jason Uhl to give the lead back to the Knights.  St. Basil seemed to start falling apart shortly after with turnovers and missed passes.

The Knights would add two more goals in the second period by Daniel Cicchini and Mitchel Robinson giving St. Mary’s a three goal lead at the close of the second period.

There was no scoring in the third period but both teams had opportunities.  At the 5:43 mark of the third period Nick Keenan was hauled down by Knights Austin Rowe while Keenan was on a breakaway.  A Penalty Shot was awarded to Keenan but he failed to put the puck behind Knights goaltender Matt Reid.  While Saint Basil was on the power play with St. Mary’s Mike Fabbro in the box for Head Check at 2:47 the Saints net minder Michael Chilelli would leave the net for an extra attacker with about a minute gone on the penalty but the Knights kept the Saints from getting any real good scoring chances.

The final score of the game was Knights – 5, Saints – 2.  Game 2 of the finals is at the John Rhodes on Monday 23 Feb with game time at 3:30 pm.
