After scoring his first career NOJHL goal one week ago against Kirkland Lake in his first game played with the Soo Thunderbirds Junior A squad, Soo Thunderbirds Midget AAA forward Matt Mackay recorded his first career Great North Midget League hat trick tonight against the Kapuskasing Flyers. It also marked the final regular season home game for the T-Birds as they get set for three final road games before the post season.
Matt MacKay’s fourteenth put the Soo up 1-0 just 4:46 into the first from Carmen Scarfone and Matt Murray. Jason Bednarski’s seventh at 16:48 from Carmen Scarfone and Ryan Mulligan put the Soo up 2-0 through twenty minutes.
Jason Bednarski would notch his second goal of the night on the power play and eighth of the season just 1:51 into the second, from Brendan Gillis and Ryan Mulligan to put the Soo up by three through two periods.
The Flyers would get back into the game just twenty eight seconds into the third period courtesy of Chad Roberts power play goal and tenth of the season from Brady Cloutier, to cut the lead to 3-1. Matt MacKay’s second goal of the night and fifteenth of the season at 8:37 from Jakob Porco and Cameron Elsby, put the Soo back up by three goals. Cameron Elsby would get his second of the season just twenty one seconds later, from Matt MacKay and Jared Fanti to put the T-Birds up 5-1. Matt MacKay would complete his first career hat trick with just 1:33 left, giving him sixteen goals on the season, unassisted, as the Soo Thunderbirds went on to defeat the last place Kapuskasing Flyers 6-1 on John Rhodes ice. MacKay’s three goal and assist performance was also his second four point game this season.
Joey Roberts was in goal tonight for the Soo’s victory.
Next action for the T-Birds will be Friday, February 6th, when the travel to New Liskeard to take on the Cubs at 8:00 from the Don Shepherdson Memorial Arena.
