In the first games of the semi finals in High School Hockey the St. Basil Saints took the lead in their series against Superior Heights Steelhawks. The second game seen St. Mary’s Knights shutout CASS Huskies to take thier lead in the best out of three series.
In the game between the Saints and Steelhawks it was a very quiet first period with no scores being made. Steelhawks netminder Quinten Grimm seen quite a bit of action where at the other end of the ice the Saints defence kept the Steelhawks from getting good scoring chances on their netminder Michael Chilelli.
Scoring was rampant in the second period with St. Basil scoring four quick goals by Matt Keenan, Matthew Ferlaino, Mike Cicchelli and Mike Trunzo. Isaaac Belsito would get the lone goal for the Steelhawks 16 seconds after the Saints fourth goal. Trent Sepkowski and Colton Read would add to the score for St. Basil and at the end of the second period the score was 6 to 1 in favour of the Saints.
St. Basil had a number of opportunities in the third period to increase their lead but Grimm held the Saints to only one goal by Dom Gervasi with a final score of 7-1 for the Saints.
The second game had St. Mary’s Knights face off against CASS Huskies. The Knights had the pressure on for the whole game with the majority of the action being in the Huskies end. St. Mary’s scored three goals in the first period with Mitchell Robinson having one and Jason Uhl would have two.
Scoring chances for the Huskies started to diminish in the second period with the Knights adding two more goals, a power play marker by Nicholas Brunetta and a goal by Dallas Jollineau making the score 5-0. After the fifth goal Huskies net minder Merrick Adams took over for Drew Gregory.
The third period had St. Mary’s add two more goals against the Huskies by Mike Fabbro and Austin Rowe and at the end of the game the score was St. Mary’s 7, CASS – 0 with the Knights goaltender Matt Reid getting the shut out.
Games two continue today with Superior Steelhawks vs St. Basil Saints at Rhodes 1 and CASS Huskies vs St. Mary’s Knights at the McMeeken. Both game times are at 3:30.
