The Soo Thunderbirds entertained a packed house at the John Rhodes centre against the Sudbury Nickel Barons today on Family Day. With a depleted Sudbury lineup, the T-Birds were looking to rebound after a 4-3 loss in Elliot Lake on Friday the 13th.

With the teams scoreless after the first the T-Birds opened up the middle frame with four straight goals. Jaren Bellini notched his twenty sixth just 1:20 into the second from Nick Tassone and Brandon Grandinetti to put the Soo up 1-0. Boris Katchouk extended his goal streak to four with his fifteenth at 3:19 from Nick Sicoly and Jaren Bellini to go up by two. Eric Hillock’s power play goal and seventeenth from David Radke and Jaren Bellini at 5:49 added to the Soo’s lead. The Soo led 4-0 after two after Caleb Boman’s dandy move around the Sudbury defence then picked his spot for his seventh at 14:28 from Anthony Miller and Devin Shell.

Jaren Bellini’s second of the game and twenty seventh of the season from Devin Shell and Brett Jeffries was the only goal in the third at 9:20, as the T-Birds went on to a 5-0 win over the Sudbury Nickel Barons.

Mario Culina made thirteen saves for his second shutout of the season.

Next action for the Soo is Saturday, February 21st at 7:30, when they travel to Powassan to take on the Voodoos from the Powassan Sportsplex.
