T-Birds Down Voodoos

The Soo Thunderbirds began a three game road trip tonight with the first of back to back meetings in Powassan. After Mario Culina picked up his second shutout on Family Day at home making 13 saves in a 5-0 win over Sudbury, the Soo went back with goaltender Brian Kment who turned 20 years old on Thursday.

Jaren Bellini’s power play goal and 28th of the season at 6:14 from Nick Tassone and Eric Hillock put the Soo up 1-0. Nick Tassone would then notch his 28th with just 51 seconds to go from Devin Shell putting the T-Birds up 2-0 after the first.

Powassan got on the board at 6:57 courtesy of Tyler Gervais-Rolfe’s 8th from Jacob Erwin and Jeremy St. Pierre, cutting the lead to 2-1. Brett Jeffries 16th at 14:57 from Matt Pinder put the Soo up 3-1 after two.

Nick Sicoly would get his 16th at 8:20 from Jaren Bellini and Caleb Boman to put the Soo up by three. Boris Katchouk became the third T-Bird on the night to notch his 16th of the season at 14:56 unassisted to put the Soo ahead 5-1. Steve Harland extended his point streak to 31 games with his 42nd goal of the season at 18:28 from Kyle Moore and Nick Proulx, but the T-Birds would go on to their 34th victory of the season with a 5-2 win over Powassan.

Brian Kment made 31 stops for his 35th career victory.

The T-Birds will face Powassan again Sunday afternoon at 2:30 from Powassan Sportsplex.
